At KD Building Company, we believe strong homes are built from the ground up—literally. This project in Bloomfield Township, Michigan is a full house construction, and this update documents the early foundation phase only.
While no above-grade work has started yet, the most critical part of the build—the foundation—has been properly executed. This stage sets the structural integrity for everything that follows.
Excavation & Site Preparation
The first major step was full site preparation and excavation.
The complete house footprint was excavated, and the basement area was dug to the engineered depth required for a full basement foundation. Soil piles visible on-site indicate the scope of excavation needed for this build. Temporary safety fencing was installed to secure the work area during construction.
Proper excavation is essential. It ensures:
Correct elevation
Stable soil conditions
A solid base for footings and walls
Skipping precision at this stage leads to long-term structural issues—something we never compromise on.
Concrete Footings
Once excavation was complete, concrete footings were poured around the entire perimeter of the foundation.
Footings are the base that supports the entire home, transferring the load safely into the ground. At this stage, accuracy is critical. The footings on this project were poured level and consistent, creating a reliable platform for the basement walls.
This step is fundamental to any new home foundation and directly impacts long-term performance.
Basement Wall Formwork & Concrete Walls
After the footings cured, basement wall forms were installed around the full perimeter. Interior bracing and supports were set to ensure alignment and strength during the concrete pour.
Concrete basement walls were then poured and allowed to properly cure. In later-stage photos, the forms were removed, revealing clean, straight, load-bearing basement walls. This confirms proper placement, consolidation, and curing—key indicators of quality foundation construction.
These walls form the structural core of the basement and support the entire home above.
Exterior Waterproofing
With the concrete walls complete, exterior waterproofing was applied before any backfilling.
A black waterproofing membrane was installed from the footings up toward the future grade line. This step protects the basement from moisture intrusion and groundwater over the life of the home.
Waterproofing is not optional—it’s a critical layer of defense in basement foundation construction, especially in Michigan’s climate.
Where the Project Stands Now
To be completely clear and transparent:
Foundation and basement walls are complete
Exterior waterproofing has been applied
Backfilling has not started yet
Framing and above-grade construction have not begun
This marks the completion of the foundation phase, not the full house build. The next steps will include backfilling, followed by framing once site conditions allow.
