KD Building Company recently completed another commercial interior build-out for Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids, this time in Appleton, Wisconsin.

For this project, our team handled the planning, construction drawings, and complete interior build-out, taking the space from an active construction site all the way to a finished, colorful, fully functioning kids’ salon.

This project is a great example of how much work goes into transforming an existing commercial space into a business that is ready to open its doors.

Starting With the Existing Commercial Space

When work began, the interior required significant modifications before the new salon layout could come together.

The construction photos show the space during the early phases of the build-out, with portions of the ceiling opened, existing finishes removed, walls being modified, and the concrete floor exposed in several areas.

Before any finished surfaces could be installed, the interior had to be prepared for the new layout and the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing requirements of the salon.

Commercial build-outs like this require careful planning because everything needs to work together — the wall locations, plumbing, electrical service, lighting, salon equipment, flooring, ceiling systems, and customer areas all need to be coordinated before the finish work begins.

Interior Demolition and Preparation

One of the first phases involved opening up portions of the existing interior so the new construction could be installed properly.

The photos show sections of the ceiling removed to provide access above the space, along with areas where existing wall finishes were opened for new work.

This stage allowed the construction team to evaluate the existing conditions and begin preparing the building for the new Sharkey’s layout.

Commercial renovation projects often involve working around existing building systems, which makes this phase especially important. Instead of building everything from an empty shell, the new construction has to be integrated into the existing structure.

New Interior Framing

As the project progressed, new metal stud framing was installed to create the rooms, partitions, and functional areas required for the salon.

The framing photos clearly show new walls being constructed throughout the space.

These new partitions helped establish the final floor plan and separate the different areas of the business.

Proper framing is critical during a commercial build-out because it determines the location of finished walls, doorways, work areas, plumbing fixtures, electrical outlets, mirrors, equipment, and other features.

At this stage, the project begins to move from an open construction space toward the layout shown on the architectural plans.

Plumbing Modifications and Rough-In Work

A salon requires considerably more plumbing coordination than many standard retail spaces.

During construction, sections of the concrete floor were opened to allow for new plumbing lines and connections.

The photos show plumbing lines being installed inside the wall cavities as well as below the floor.

This type of work has to be completed before walls are closed and before the final flooring is installed.

Planning these systems correctly is especially important for a salon environment, where multiple workstations and service areas may require water, drainage, and other utilities.

By coordinating these systems during the early construction phases, the finished space can remain clean and functional while all of the necessary infrastructure remains hidden behind the walls and below the floor.

Coordinating Electrical, Lighting, and Ceiling Work

The ceiling was another major part of the interior transformation.

During construction, sections of the ceiling were opened so the necessary building systems could be accessed and modified.

Once the rough construction work was completed, the finished space received a combination of ceiling finishes and lighting that work with the final salon design.

In the completed photos, track lighting can be seen throughout the space, providing bright illumination over the salon stations and customer areas.

Good lighting is especially important in a salon because employees need consistent visibility at each workstation while customers also expect the interior to feel bright, clean, and welcoming.

Creating the Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids Interior

Once the structural and utility work was completed, the project moved into the finishing phase.

This is where the transformation became especially noticeable.

The finished Appleton location features the colorful and energetic style associated with Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids.

Bright pink, green, purple, black, and white finishes were incorporated throughout the interior.

The bold color palette gives the salon a completely different appearance compared with the unfinished construction space shown in the earlier photographs.

The final interior includes a mix of distinctive finishes that help create an environment designed specifically for children and families.

Custom Salon Stations and Mirrors

The completed space includes multiple salon workstations with large mirrors and dedicated styling chairs.

One of the most noticeable design elements is the use of brightly colored green and black salon chairs positioned in front of illuminated mirror areas.

Large mirrors help make the space feel more open while also providing the functionality required by the salon staff.

The styling stations were positioned to allow employees to work efficiently while still maintaining a comfortable amount of space for customers and families.

Checkerboard Flooring and Wood-Look Finishes

Another major visual feature of the completed project is the flooring.

Different flooring finishes were used to help define areas of the salon.

Black-and-white checkerboard flooring creates a fun, retro-inspired look around the styling stations, while wood-look flooring adds warmth to other portions of the interior.

The combination of these materials gives the space more visual interest while helping separate different functional areas.

This contrast can clearly be seen in the finished photographs, where the patterned flooring transitions into the warmer wood-style surface.

Bright Colors and Wall Finishes

The wall finishes completely transformed the space.

During construction, the walls were primarily unfinished or painted in neutral gray tones.

In the finished salon, those same areas were replaced with bold pink, purple, and green surfaces.

Striped wall details were also incorporated into several areas, adding another layer of character to the interior.

These features help create the playful atmosphere expected from a children’s salon while maintaining an organized commercial layout.

A Fun and Functional Space for Kids

A children’s salon needs to feel different from a traditional salon.

The final build-out was designed to create an environment that feels fun and approachable for younger customers while still functioning efficiently for the employees.

The finished photographs show colorful salon seating, bright wall finishes, decorative graphics, mirrors, custom work areas, and open spaces for customers and parents.

Even details such as the decorative disco ball and themed graphics contribute to the overall experience.

The result is a space that immediately communicates the Sharkey’s brand when customers walk through the door.

From Construction Site to Finished Business

One of the most rewarding parts of a commercial interior build-out is seeing the difference between the early construction phase and the completed business.

In the construction photos, the space has exposed framing, open ceilings, unfinished floors, plumbing work, and construction materials throughout the interior.

In the finished photos, those same areas have become a bright and highly detailed commercial salon.

The walls, plumbing, flooring, lighting, mirrors, salon stations, finishes, and customer areas all come together to create the final environment.

This type of transformation requires careful coordination through every stage of construction.

Plans and Construction Managed Together

KD Building Company handled both the plans and the complete interior construction for this Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids location.

Having the planning and construction portions of a commercial project coordinated together helps create a smoother process from the beginning.

The project moves from the initial layout and construction drawings into demolition, rough construction, framing, utilities, finishes, and final completion.

That level of coordination is especially important with commercial interiors where many different systems need to fit within a limited amount of space.

Commercial Interior Build-Outs by KD Building Company

Projects like this Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids location demonstrate the amount of planning and construction required behind the scenes before a business is ready to open.

A completed commercial interior may look simple when customers walk through the door, but underneath the finished walls and flooring is an extensive amount of construction work.

From new interior framing and plumbing modifications to flooring, lighting, ceilings, wall finishes, and final details, every phase plays an important role in the finished project.
